Wired Home Security System
If you don’t want to commit to a contract and monthly payments for a
private security system, you can always try to do it yourself.
Best Buy, Home Depot and Amazon all have wired home security systems on sale for the
do-it-yourselfer. I’ve seen prices from $119 up to
$300. They range from simple alarm systems to surveillance
systems.
Companies that specialize in wired home security systems have every aspect
covered. There are systems which allow you to monitor your home
from your cell phone, door and window closure sensors (at least half a dozen to choose from), motion
detectors, glass break detectors, smoke and gas detectors, sirens or strobe lights and of course, key
pads.
Wired Home Security System - The Cost
A basic wired security package from one of these companies costs about $100 and is
professionally installed. This wired system will cover less
ground than the wireless system but is easily programmed and suitable for home or businesses. A little further up the line are the wired security packages costing
$215. If wired, it services the same amount of areas as the $100
unit but includes one year of monitoring from the company associated with the installers, an insurance
certificate, a battery backup and more as additional features.

Motion detectors come in all shapes and sizes, some even having special settings for homes
with pets (up to a certain size). There were a good dozen to
choose from $16 all the way up to $165. Some were devised for
indoors while others are mounted outdoors to prevent break-ins through windows or doors, others to secure
sheds or detached garages and an outdoor sensor with dual beams to help prevent against false alarms
triggered by falling leaves, blowing debris and birds. It also
has a 99% blockage proof beam. Let’s see how the burglars find a
way around that! It even has a design that deals with frost
cover… something someone in Wisconsin could definitely use!
Glass break detectors come in four types ranging from $32 to $48 in price. At present, the $40 unit has not been reviewed, the $32 unit received five
out of five stars, and the other two units received four out of five. The unreviewed glass break detector seemed to have more bells and whistles
than the other three, but any of them should get the job done.
These units do not have to be mounted on your window. They can
be mounted on a wall across the room and still detect a disruption in the window upon which they are
focused. From a distance of 20 feet, they were fully functional.
The smoke and gas detectors are nothing out of the ordinary other than the fact that they’re wired to your
security system. They are designed to detect natural gas, smoke,
carbon monoxide and heat.
Wired Home Security System - More Options
Sirens and strobes—now we’re talking! This is
where the fun begins. I’ve got a neighbor that I’m going to
point that siren right at. Seriously though, there are nine
sirens for your perusal ranging in price from $12 up to $30.
Only one of them really looks like the old air raid sirens and another one boarders on that same design but
doesn’t quite achieve it. The others are relatively
inconspicuous. Only one actually advertises a strobe so if your
burglar is an epileptic, he’s in big trouble. Some are referred
to as indoor/outdoor and I’m assuming the ones that don’t have that distinction are for outdoor use only. The
only thing left to decide is whether or not it’s worth the money; and that’s a personal choice.
